Periodontium is the specialized tissue that consists of four components: cementum, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone and gingival tissue. These four structures combined and surrounds and support the teeth in jaw.

Common problems related to the anatomy of teeth: Dental caries:

Dental caries is a kind of bacterial infection that causes destruction of hard tissues (enamel, dentin) and pulp of the teeth. Initially it attacks on enamel, as enamel does not contain any innervations it is asymptomatic. With the period of time it involves dentin where it will show some symptoms like sensitivity and response towards hot and cold. If left untreated, caries will advance through dentin stimulating pulpitis and eventually pulp infection and necrosis which will require root canal treatment (RCT).
